With just under 2 weeks to go until the start of the 2012 Virgin London Marathon, Laneone went to film the third of our 3 marathon boys, Alex Hains, complete his final marathon workout before the race. Alex will be running a 2mile tempo, followed by 6x800m reps, and a final 1mile tempo. [...]
With around 3 weeks to go until the Virgin London Marathon, Laneone went to film John Beattie and Luke Cragg complete their final long workout before the race. After running 10x1mile in around 4:40, the boys have since tackled 8x3000m on the track in the week, and now head to the Cloud Trail. [...]
Slightly later than planned, our roundup of action from last week, including wins for Bristol&West and Westbury at the Midland Road Relays, and Liverpool and Rotherham at the Northern Road Relays. Andy Vernon ran a fast road 5k in Carlsbad, and a marshal mix-up led to 4 Brits going off course in Reading. [...]
With 4 weeks to go until the London Marathon, Laneone went to film two of our Road2London trio, John Beattie and Luke Cragg, tackle 10x1mile. With a target time of 4.40/mile, off a lap’s jog recovery, this would be a stern test of the boys’ fitness coming into the final phase of training. [...]
The final team for the European Championships in Helsinki was confirmed this morning following the conclusion of the UK Championships and Aviva 2012 Trials on Sunday evening. UKA had picked an initial squad of 109 athletes last week, with any track athletes who gained automatic qualification for the Olympic Games being deselected from the GB European team.
Several winners from the Aviva Trials have been deselected, including the likes of 800m winner Andrew Osagie, 400m winner Martyn Rooney and 400m Hurdles winner Dai Greene. On the women’s side, Christine Ohuruogu and Laura Weightman will travel to the Olympics instead of Helsinki after winning the 400m and 1500m respectively. Jo Pavey, winner of the 5000m, goes in the 10000m in Helsinki.
The first wave of selections for the European Athletics Championships took place on Monday, as a squad of 109 athletes was chosen to compete in Helsinki, Finland, at the end of the month. Following the Aviva Trials at the weekend, this squad will be reduced to the team which will compete for GB at the championships themselves.
Any track athletes who gain automatic selection for the Olympic Games at the Aviva Trials will be automatically deselected from the squad for the European Championships; field athletes will be permitted to compete at both. Athletes who have already run multiple Olympic A standards, such as Mo Farah in the Men’s 5000m and Tiffany Porter in the Women’s 100m hurdles, are thus unlikely to compete in Helsinki.

After completing some great weeks of training early in his buildup, Alex went to run the Trafford 10k and posted a PB of 29.34 in finishing 3rd. However, soon after this, he had to miss a big block of training with tightness in his back, during which time he could barely run, and certainly couldn’t run fast. A trip to see physio Mark Buckingham got him back on the road again, but he has missed some of the longer workouts he would have liked. Alex is philosophical about the missed time, and say’s his attitude towards the race hasn’t changed. Former Butler University 5000m runner Tommy Davies joins him for this workout. (more…)

With miles of unbroken trails perfect for tempo running, the Cload Trail is the perfect place to take on the biggest workout of the cycle. The tempo will include 4 6-mile stints; one at 5:45, one at 5:30, one at 5:05, and a final one back at 5:45 again. That’s the plan, anyway. This is the closest the two will come to running hard over marathon distance until race day, and will give them a much clearer idea of what kind of shape they are in with just 3 weeks to go (filmed last week).
