Road2London – John Beattie Interview
Posted By Joe on March 22, 2012
John Beattie is the third of the three athletes Laneone will be following over the next few weeks in the buildup to the London Marathon. Unlike Luke Cragg and Alex Hains, he has raced over the marathon distance before, so knows a little more what to expect having run New York last Autumn.
Like Cragg and Hains, Beattie obtained a scholarship to the United States, where he went and competed for Tulsa University in Oklahoma. He saw a great improvement in his track PBs whilst there, lowering his 5000m PB to 13.42, and his 10000m PB to 28.32 during a stellar 2010. He finished 29th at the NCA Cross Country championships to earn All American recognition, and competed at the NCAA Outdoor Track and field Championships twice, placing 10th in the 10000m both times.
Beattie stepped up to the Marathon distance for the first time last autumn, running 2:23 in New York after suffering with cramp in his calves in the second half of the race. He has already been racing well since, however, most recently placing third at the English National Cross Country championships. He talks to Laneone about his prep, how he is handling working a job and fitting in training, and getting advice from legendary Italian coach Renato Canova, the man behind Saif Saeed Shaheen, Nicholas Kemboi, Abel Kirui and Imane Merga, to name just a few.
Tune in soon for updates on how the three are getting on.
